My name is Steve William Hakkarainen. I am an English teacher. I specialize in teaching English to people whose first language is not English. I believe that people should be heard. We all have the right to express ourselves. I want people to feel empowered. I became an English teacher because of my experiences traveling in Australia and Hong Kong at the ages of 18 and 19. I was young and broke. Through guidance and the wisdom of others I began a long and arduous journey. My philosophy in life and in teaching has a lot to do with enjoyment. I think learning should be fun. I am a tactile learner. I also use my ears and eyes, but I learn more when I actually try it. I think mistakes are great. We learn more when we screw up than if we do it perfectly every time. So, I want my clients to speak, ask questions, communicate and be confused at times. I love to see the lights go on when they understand something.

Be aware that teachers spend more time preparing than teaching. Volunteers are expected to help out in other ways before they can enter the wonderful world of Steve's classes. The classroom is a special place and not just anyone may enter. Do you have what it takes? Do you speak English? I need help planning events, preparing lessons and cleaning. If you are only interested in playing with children, I suggest you go somewhere else! If you work hard and are a positive influence, I will pay you for your work as well as give some guidance.
